6-7:30 PM CHILDREN'S MODULAR SYNTHESIZER WORKSHOP Kids young and old are invited to attend a very hands on and basics centered modular synthesizer and modular video synthesis workshop. Lets make some weird sounds and videos! Nathan Cearley, David Grant and Jonas Berswill demonstrate some fundamentals and then the kids will be invited to try out what they’ve learned. While this workshop is designed for kids 6-18, adults are welcome as well.

NATHAN CEARLEY is a New York City schoolteacher, one half of the electronics duo Long Distance Poison, and organizer of the Modular Equinox/Solstice music series.

DAVID GRANT is one half of the electronics duo On a Clear Day.

JONAS BERS is a Hudson Valley based audiovisual performer who works with DIY and circuit bent modular video systems.

STEVE GUNN (http://steve-gunn.com/) is a New York-based guitarist and songwriter, sometimes serving as guitarist in fellow Philadelphia-bred troubadour Kurt Vile’s band the Violators.

MARY LATTIMORE (http://marylattimore.net/) is a harpist who has performed and recorded with such great artists as Meg Baird, Thurston Moore, Sharon Van Etten, Jarvis Cocker, Kurt Vile, Steve Gunn, Ed Askew and Fursaxa. Mary Lattimore has also done soundtrack projects including The Valerie Project, Lopapeysa, a film by David Kessler set in Iceland, and the film score for Marina Abramovic: the Artist is Present, a documentary about the artist.

LAURA ORTMAN (https://thedustdiveflash.bandcamp.com/) received the First Nations Composer Initiative Award Grant for founding The Coast Orchestra, the all-Native American orchestra in 2008. She was a member of the THE DUST DIVE and Stars Like Fleas and has written & recorded two solo albums (recorded by Martin Bisi). Laura Ortman was also selected for the 2014-15 Robert Rauschenberg Residency in Captiva, Florida. New album in 2015!

Back then, he used typical store-bought keyboard synthesizers to create a sound he calls “ambient orchestra.” But in 2006, Regula set his keyboards aside and started becoming more than a musician by building his own instruments — modular synthesizers — despite having no background in electronics. Paesthetics (puh-sth-etics) is the conditional recognition that certain aspects of a creative or social process will forever be out of ones control, and the peace of mind and creative potential of that realization. The anticipation of both the stagnant nature of the seemingly best scenarios and the unique creative potential of the blatantly worst moments. It stands for "pathetic aesthetics". Loosely it means "do it anyway you can with no resources" or "the artful solution is the most fun". Or more confusingly "do what with, with what you have." It is not a nod to the resulting appearance necessarily, but underscores a strategy of adaptability and feistiness that one needs to have to get things done in an environment where at any moment a hundred drunken party monsters can descend upon you and cover everything with joyous screeching and booty moves. the state of “scrappy glory”. The wave is coming, and you have to get this plastic playground slide out of here! It is most efficiently illustrated, I believe, with the phrase "Is that thing bothering you? Screw it to the wall. Boom."

It also acknowledges what role "lack of control" can, or should, have over something big and complicated and social (such as a show in your house), but it also relates to having a subtle hand on things, a respect for "vibes," and an organic approach to life. Paesthetics comes out of practical need. When you ratchet the variables up and refuse to impinge upon even and asshole’s right to some kind of good time, Paesthetics will be your guide. its It’s like building a chair while being chased by a pack of wolves though a thrift store, after-hours.

The current crop of believers happens to G Lucas Crane, Joe Ahearn, Kunal Gupta, Nat Roe, and Jordan Michael Iannucci Amc, for reasons they're still figuring out. It's mostly schemed out of The Silent Barn, in service to the Silent Barn Kitchen.
