Silent Barn Public Meeting XII: The Personal Experience of Surveillance – with Ryan Devereaux, Adam Harvey, Julia Lipscomb, Adama Bah, Sonya Belakhlef, Educated Little Monsters

The Personal Experience of Surveillance is a series of storytelling panel discussions across New York City that aims to build a shared understanding of the personal impact of surveillance across different kinds of everyday familiar people.

This second session in the series will include the following speakers:

Ryan Devereaux (The Intercept) - The short-term mission of the Intercept is to provide a platform to report on the documents previously provided by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. Ryan will be speaking about reporting on those issues and the lengths that he, Glenn Greenwald, annd others go to at The Intercept to navigate the surveillance state. Adama Bah (ADAMA) – On March 24, 2005, Adama Bah, a sixteen-year-old Muslim girl, awoke at dawn to discover nearly a dozen armed FBI agents inside her family’s apartment in East Harlem. They arrested her and her father, Mamadou Bah, and a government document leaked to the press claimed that Adama was a potential suicide bomber but failed to provide any evidence to support this claim. Adam Harvey (Privacy Gift Shop) – Adam Harvey researches and develop art about privacy and counter-surveillance technologies, including the Privacy Gift Shop, an online marketplace for countersurveillance art and privacy products Julia Lipscomb (ABC No Rio, Vera Project, Silent Barn) – Julia Lipscomb is a freelance writer, zinester and grad student in New York, attending Pratt Institute for an M.P.S. in Arts & Cultural Management and volunteers in the zine library at ABC No Rio. Bushwick's Educated Little Monsters Youth Group will be debuting a special related performance, and artists Sonya Belakhuf and Adam Harvey have contributed a interactive art installation for the evening.
